About Ouham-Pendé

Bozoum is the capital of Ouham-Pendé prefecture in northwestern Central African Republic, near the borders with Cameroon and Chad. It is a small administrative and trading town that serves a wide agricultural hinterland of savanna, villages and pastoral areas.

The town's history is visible in its mission heritage. In the early 1920s Bozoum was chosen as the site of a Brethren mission, with the Bassai mission station established on a hill just outside the settlement, and in 1931 Catholic Spiritans founded the Saint Michel mission, now the parish at the heart of local religious and community life.

Bozoum functions as a regional market and service centre. The central market brings together traders selling grains, cassava, groundnuts, vegetables, livestock and everyday goods, while the surrounding area is home to Gbaya, Kare and Fulani communities whose livelihoods mix farming and herding. Motorcycle taxis and shared vehicles connect the town to nearby centres such as Paoua, Bocaranga, Bossangoa and Bouar, though roads can be rough, especially in the rainy season.

The town has a tropical wet-and-dry climate, with a rainy season roughly from April to October and a drier season from November to March. Security conditions in parts of Ouham-Pendé have been unstable in recent years, so visitors need up-to-date information and local guidance.

For travellers, Bozoum is less a conventional tourist destination than a working regional centre offering a direct view of everyday life, local trade, mission history and rural landscapes. It mainly serves business, NGO, humanitarian and overland travellers moving through northwestern CAR.

Ouham-Pendé Travel Guide

Best Time to Visit

The dry season from November to March is the most practical time to visit Bozoum, with lower rainfall and generally easier movement on unpaved roads. The wettest months, especially July to September, can make rural routes difficult and muddy.

How to Get Around

Bozoum is small enough to explore on foot, while motorcycle taxis handle short trips around town. For longer journeys to Paoua, Bocaranga, Bossangoa or Bouar, shared taxis, pickup trucks and 4x4 vehicles are used, but road conditions vary and a reliable local driver is helpful.

Where to Stay

Accommodation is limited and mostly simple, including small guesthouses and mission-linked lodgings near the town centre. Staying close to the central market makes it easier to arrange onward travel and find meals.

Food & Drink

Meals centre on local staples such as cassava, sorghum, groundnut sauces and grilled meat, with fresh produce from the central market. Small local restaurants and market stalls are the main options, and visitors may also find local sorghum beer and seasonal tropical fruit.
