The airfield has a grass runway and handles scheduled shuttle and charter flights rather than large commercial services. Federal Airlines operates connections to the reserve from OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg and Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport near the Kruger National Park.
Located close to the iSimangaliso Wetland Park, the airport lies about 35 km north of Hluhluwe. Road access from Durban's King Shaka International Airport is roughly 250–300 km and typically takes three to four hours, while Richards Bay is about an hour and a half away by road.
Because the airfield is small, most passenger services such as dining and accommodation are provided by the reserve's lodges. Lodge representatives meet arriving guests and arrange onward transfers to Phinda and the surrounding area.
