About Wausau Downtown Airport
Wausau Downtown Airport is a city-owned, public-use general aviation airport serving Wausau and Marathon County in north-central Wisconsin. It opened in 1937 and today handles private aircraft, business and charter flights, flight training and seaplane operations, complementing Central Wisconsin Airport about nine miles to the south.
The airport is located just south of downtown Wausau at 725 Woods Place, roughly 2–3 miles (3–5 km) from the city centre. It has two asphalt runways—5,200-foot runway 13/31 and 3,041-foot runway 5/23—along with a water landing area used by seaplanes, and operates without a control tower.
The terminal building was originally constructed in 1952 for Wisconsin Central Airlines and an FAA Flight Service Station, and has since been renovated while preserving the city's aviation heritage. Wausau Flying Service is the fixed-base operator, providing fuel, hangar space, ground handling, flight training, aircraft rental and scenic flights.
With its close-in location, the airport gives general aviation travellers quick access to Wausau's downtown businesses, hotels and nearby recreational areas such as Rib Mountain, making it a practical gateway for central and northern Wisconsin.
