About Volkel Air Base
Volkel Air Base is a Royal Netherlands Air Force installation in the province of North Brabant. The airfield was first built by German occupying forces in 1940 and developed into an operational base during the Second World War, before being rebuilt for Dutch military use after the war.
Today it is one of the Netherlands' two main F-35 fighter bases, alongside Leeuwarden Air Base, with a focus on air support and air defence. The base lies east of the town of Uden in the municipality of Maashorst, roughly between Eindhoven, Nijmegen and 's-Hertogenbosch.
The airfield has two parallel runways of about 3,000 metres and serves as an important Dutch and NATO defence location. Because it is an active military base, scheduled civilian passenger services and public terminal facilities are not available, and access is restricted.
For authorised visitors and personnel, Uden is about 5 km to the west and can be reached in around 10–15 minutes by road. The A50 motorway links the area with Eindhoven, Nijmegen and 's-Hertogenbosch, making onward travel across the province relatively straightforward.
