About Leeuwarden Air Base
Leeuwarden Air Base is a military airfield operated by the Royal Netherlands Air Force, located northwest of Leeuwarden, the capital of the Dutch province of Friesland. The site opened in 1938 as a civil airfield used for intermediate flights between Schiphol and Eelde, and it later grew into one of the Netherlands' important defence locations.
Today the base is home to Dutch F-35 fighter aircraft of 322 Squadron and, since early 2022, MQ-9 Reaper unmanned aerial vehicles. It also hosts the multinational Exercise Frisian Flag each year, bringing together air forces from several countries for large-scale training.
The airfield has two asphalt runways, 05/23 and 09/27, and lies roughly 4 km northwest of Leeuwarden city centre. Access is by road, with onward travel to Leeuwarden available by taxi, private transfer or car; public access to the base itself is restricted because it is an active military installation.
For civilian travelers, Leeuwarden Air Base does not operate as a commercial passenger airport. Most scheduled passenger traffic in the region is handled by larger airports elsewhere in the Netherlands, while the base remains focused on military operations and training.
