About Volk Field Airport
Volk Field Airport is a military airfield and Air National Guard base near Camp Douglas in central Wisconsin. It supports the Wisconsin Air National Guard's 128th Air Control Squadron and the Air National Guard Combat Readiness Training Center, with missions focused on command and control, weather support, and individual training.
Located about 1 mile north of Camp Douglas and roughly 86 miles northwest of Madison, the airfield lies adjacent to Interstate 90/94 and is reached by road from exit 55. The facility has a 9,000-foot runway, but it does not operate scheduled commercial passenger flights; use is generally limited to military and prior-permission civil aircraft.
The site's aviation history dates to the construction of its first hard-surface runways in 1935 and 1936. In 1957 the installation was named for 1st Lieutenant Jerome A. Volk, the first Wisconsin Air National Guard pilot killed in combat in the Korean War.
