About Virginia Airport
Virginia Airport is a public general aviation airport serving Durban and the wider KwaZulu-Natal North Coast region. Opened in June 1959, it developed as a base for light aircraft, flight training, charter operations and aviation services in the eThekwini Municipality.
Located approximately 10 km northeast of central Durban in the suburb of Durban North, the airport operates a single asphalt runway designated 05/23 and a compact terminal. It was long associated with the Durban Airshow and remains home to the Durban Wings Club, one of the country's oldest flying clubs.
Today the airport mainly supports pilot training, private flying, charter and mercy flights, together with aircraft maintenance and fuelling. Travelers can continue to Durban's city centre, the nearby Umhlanga and Ballito areas, and the North Coast by taxi, private transfer or rental car.
Despite periodic proposals to close or redevelop the site, Virginia Airport continues to function as a convenient general aviation gateway close to Durban's northern suburbs and beaches.
