Upavon Aerodrome (UPV)

Upavon Aerodrome is a former Royal Air Force station near Upavon in Wiltshire, on the northern edge of Salisbury Plain. Opened in 1912 and later known as RAF Upavon, it was the original home of the Central Flying School and played a long role in British military aviation before the RAF station closed in 1993.

The site was transferred to the British Army and became Trenchard Lines, where the grass airfield is maintained for military training, gliding and limited flying. Wyvern (Army Gliding Club) and 622 Volunteer Gliding Squadron operate from the airfield, which has grass runways and no commercial passenger terminal.

The aerodrome lies about 1.5 miles east of Upavon village, roughly 4 miles south of Pewsey and about 20 miles north of Salisbury. Pewsey railway station, about 3.5 miles away, offers mainline services towards London Paddington, while local roads connect the area with Devizes, Marlborough and Salisbury.

For visitors, Upavon is primarily a working airfield rather than a passenger airport. Access is controlled as part of the military site, and onward travel is typically by taxi, private transfer or car to nearby Wiltshire towns and destinations.
