About Warton Aerodrome
Warton Aerodrome is a military and defence aviation facility serving the Preston area and Lancashire's Fylde coast. Operated by BAE Systems, it is a major site for military aircraft assembly and testing rather than a scheduled commercial passenger airport, and access is generally by prior permission.
The airfield's history dates to the Second World War, when runways were built in 1940 for use as a satellite of RAF Coastal Command at Squires Gate in Blackpool. It later served as RAF Warton before becoming a BAE Systems facility.
Located about 7 miles (11 km) west of Preston, Warton Aerodrome is reached mainly by road, with nearby links to the M55 and local routes serving Blackpool, Lytham St Annes and the wider North West.
Because it is not a public passenger terminal, facilities are limited and support BAE Systems operations and visiting business aviation. Travellers continuing to Preston, Blackpool or the Fylde coast typically arrange taxis, private transfers or rental cars in advance.
