About Whalsay Airstrip
Whalsay Airstrip is a small airfield at Skaw in the northeast of Whalsay, one of the Shetland Islands. Opened in 1972, it serves the island with a single gravel runway about 457 metres long, used mainly for private planes, charters and emergency flights.
The airstrip has no scheduled passenger services, although it can act as a request stop on the local Tingwall to Out Skerries air service. Its compact layout and basic waiting facilities reflect its role as a general aviation landing strip rather than a commercial airport.
The airfield is connected to Symbister by road, and the journey onward to the Shetland mainland involves a ferry from Symbister to Laxo followed by a drive to Lerwick. Private transfers, taxis and rental cars can be arranged for the onward journey.
Despite its small scale, the airstrip provides an important link for residents, visitors and emergency services on Whalsay, with the island's golf course lying next to the runway.
