Uaxactun Airport (UAX)

Uaxactun Airport is a small airstrip serving the village of Uaxactún in the Petén region of northern Guatemala. It sits in the Maya Biosphere Reserve, about 23 km north of Tikal National Park and roughly 96 km from Flores, the main town in the area.

The airstrip has a single grass runway of about 300 metres and was historically used to support chicle extraction and access to the surrounding jungle. Scheduled air service was discontinued in the late 1970s after a road was built connecting Uaxactún to Tikal and Flores, and today the field is used mainly by small aircraft, charter flights and research operations.

Reaching the area is possible by road from Flores via Tikal, though the route is rough and four-wheel-drive vehicles are usually recommended, especially during the rainy season. The airstrip lies close to the Maya archaeological site of Uaxactún, which includes the Temple of the Masks and several ancient structural groups.

Because passenger facilities at the airport are limited, most travelers use Flores or Guatemala City for onward connections and arrange ground transportation or small-aircraft charters in advance.
