About Petén

Flores is the capital of Guatemala's Petén department and the main gateway to the ancient Maya lowlands. Built on a small island in Lake Petén Itzá, the town is connected to the mainland by a short causeway and is known for its cobblestone streets, pastel-coloured buildings, lakeside walkway and relaxed atmosphere.

Long a Maya settlement, the area later developed as a colonial and trading centre on the route to the great ruins of northern Guatemala. Today its compact historic core preserves churches, plazas and a waterfront promenade, while Santa Elena and San Benito form a larger urban strip on the mainland.

Flores is best known as the starting point for Tikal, the UNESCO World Heritage archaeological site, as well as Yaxhá, Uaxactún and other jungle-shrouded Maya cities. Boat trips on Lake Petén Itzá, kayaking, swimming and sunset views from the malecón are popular local experiences.

The town and surrounding municipalities support eco-tourism, archaeology, conservation and small-scale commerce, with an airport, hotels and tour operators serving travellers across the region.

For both leisure and business visitors, Flores offers a compact, walkable base with easy access to some of Central America's most important archaeological and natural landscapes.

Petén Travel Guide

Best Time to Visit

The dry season from November to April is the most comfortable time for visiting Tikal, Yaxhá and the lake, with warm days and less rain. May to October is hotter and wetter, but the forest is greener and sites are quieter.

How to Get Around

Flores Island is small and easy to explore on foot, while tuk-tuks and taxis are useful for short trips to Santa Elena and San Benito. Shuttle vans, public buses, rental cars and boats connect the town with Tikal, Yaxhá and lakeside lodges.

Where to Stay

Staying on Flores Island puts restaurants, lake views and the malecón within walking distance. Santa Elena and San Benito offer more budget and practical options near the airport, while eco-lodges and lakeside hotels outside town provide a quieter base.

Food & Drink

Local food includes lake fish such as white fish from Petén Itzá, tamales, grilled meats and fresh fruit. Cafés and restaurants line the Flores waterfront, and Santa Elena's market is a good place to try inexpensive Guatemalan and Petén-style dishes.
