About Tum Airport
Tum Airport is a small public airport in southwestern Ethiopia serving the villages of Tum and Maji, the administrative center of Maji District. It provides a vital air link for a remote part of the South West Ethiopia Peoples' Region, where road access is limited and travel can be slow.
The airfield sits at an elevation of about 4,650 feet (1,417 m) and has a single grass runway. The nearby town of Maji lies on the Boma Plateau, more than 3,000 feet (about 910 m) above the airport and roughly 20 km away.
Because the surrounding terrain is mountainous, road connections are rough and four-wheel-drive vehicles are generally recommended. Tum is about 165 km from Mizan Aman by road, and the airport helps connect the district to larger towns and regional centers.
Facilities at the airport are very limited, with basic waiting areas and no significant commercial amenities, so travelers should prepare accordingly. Despite its small size, the airstrip remains an important transport link for residents, visitors, and supplies in this part of Ethiopia.
