About Thumrait Air Base

Thumrait Air Base is a Royal Air Force of Oman military airfield located near the town of Thumrait in the Dhofar Governorate of southern Oman. Originally an oil depot, the site was developed as an air base to project air power across the southern region, with early Omani air units equipped with Hawker Hunter aircraft tasked with ground attack and intercept missions.

The base sits at an elevation of about 479 metres and operates a single 4,000-metre asphalt runway aligned 17/35. It serves military and approved operational traffic rather than scheduled commercial flights, with ICAO code OOTH and IATA code TTH.

Thumrait Air Base lies on the inland side of Dhofar, roughly 80 kilometres north of Salalah, the nearest major city. The main road connection is Highway 31, which links Salalah with inland destinations such as Nizwa and provides access to the surrounding desert and mountain areas.

As a military installation, the base offers controlled access and limited public passenger services. For travellers and supporting personnel, road transport is the practical way to continue to Salalah, the Dhofar coast and other parts of southern Oman.
