About Muscat
Muscat is the capital and largest city of Oman, stretched along the Gulf of Oman between the sea and the rugged Al Hajar Mountains. Its low-rise white buildings, mountain backdrop and long coastline give it a calmer, more traditional character than many other Gulf capitals.
The city's history as a maritime trading hub is still visible in Old Muscat and Mutrah, where Portuguese-built forts, restored houses and the busy Mutrah Souq sit close to the corniche. Landmarks such as the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, the Royal Opera House Muscat and the ceremonial Al Alam Palace blend contemporary Omani architecture with centuries of seafaring heritage.
Neighbourhoods give Muscat different faces: Mutrah is the historic port and market area, Ruwi is the commercial heart, Al Khuwair holds government offices and hotels, Qurum offers beachfront and upscale dining, and Seeb extends towards the airport. Museums such as the National Museum of Oman and Bait Al Zubair add context to the city's culture.
As Oman's administrative and business centre, Muscat anchors the country's economy through ports, logistics, energy and a growing tourism and events sector. The Oman Convention & Exhibition Centre and venues such as the Royal Opera House support conferences and cultural events, while its restaurants, waterfront cafés and seasonal festivals appeal to both visitors and residents.
For leisure travellers, Muscat offers beaches, mountains, historic quarters and a relaxed pace; for business travellers, it provides a safe and well-connected base with modern hotels, event facilities and easy access to the airport and the rest of Oman.
