About Teniente Vidal Airport
Teniente Vidal Airport is a public aerodrome serving Coyhaique, the capital of Chile's Aysén Region, and the surrounding Patagonian territory. It mainly handles general aviation, small regional flights and charter services connecting Coyhaique with remote communities such as Villa O'Higgins, Melinka and Puerto Aguirre, as well as supporting aeromedical evacuations and rescue operations.
The airport began operations in December 1953, created through a local initiative to improve access to Coyhaique, particularly during the harsh winters when the road to Balmaceda was difficult to travel. It later played an important role as an air bridge during the 1960 'Terremoto Blanco' to deliver aid to the region.
The aerodrome is administered by Chile's Dirección General de Aeronáutica Civil (DGAC) and features an asphalt runway 1,546 metres long and 30 metres wide, together with an administrative building and a passenger terminal with capacity for around 150 passengers.
Located about 5 km southeast of central Coyhaique, the airport is typically reached by taxi or private transfer in around 10–15 minutes, providing a convenient local air link for travelers exploring the Aysén region.
