Sumbawanga Airport (SUT)

Sumbawanga Airport is the main airport serving Sumbawanga, the capital of the Rukwa Region in southwestern Tanzania. It functions as a regional gateway linking the town and surrounding areas with other parts of Tanzania, particularly for business and leisure travellers.

The airport has a long local history: it was first built in 1945 to serve light agricultural aircraft and was later rehabilitated and reopened for domestic flights in 1985. After a comprehensive rebuild that began in 2018 and was co-financed by the Tanzanian government and the European Investment Bank, the modernised airport reopened for commercial operations on 24 April 2026 with an inaugural Air Tanzania flight from Dodoma.

The upgraded facility includes a 1.75 km asphalt runway, taxiway and expanded apron, together with a passenger terminal designed to handle around 150,000 passengers per year. It is located about 3 km from Sumbawanga town centre, making road access quick and convenient for taxis, private transfers and rental vehicles.

As a gateway to the western border region, the airport supports travel toward Lake Tanganyika, Kalambo Falls and areas near Zambia and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Air Tanzania has announced plans for twice-weekly scheduled services, strengthening Sumbawanga's role as a practical entry point for the region.
