About Southern Illinois Airport
Southern Illinois Airport is a public general aviation airport serving Carbondale and Murphysboro in Jackson County, Illinois. Opened in 1950 and originally known as Murdale Airport, it has developed into an important facility for private, charter, business and flight-training aviation in the region.
Located about three miles northwest of central Carbondale and east of Murphysboro, the airport is operated by the Southern Illinois Airport Authority. It covers 850 acres and has three lighted asphalt runways, with the longest measuring 6,506 feet, plus an air traffic control tower that operates daily from 7am to 9pm.
The airport is the home operating base for Southern Illinois University's aviation flight and aviation technologies programs and supports a fixed-base operator offering fuel, ground handling, hangars, parking, flight training, aircraft maintenance, pilot supplies and a restaurant.
