About Skukuza Airport
Skukuza Airport is the only commercial airport located inside the Kruger National Park, serving the southern Kruger region and the neighbouring Sabi Sand Game Reserve. The airport sits near Skukuza Rest Camp in Mpumalanga and acts as a direct air gateway for safari travellers arriving from Johannesburg and Cape Town.
Originally opened in the late 1950s, the airport was closed to commercial traffic in 2001 and later refurbished with a resurfaced runway and a new thatched terminal, reopening for scheduled flights on 2 June 2014. Today Airlink operates the airport's scheduled domestic services.
The compact single-terminal airport is designed in a low-impact, bush-lodge style, with check-in, a departure lounge and facilities including a coffee shop, bar, small retail boutique and car hire desk. Its location inside the park means travellers can reach safari camps and lodges quickly by road.
By road, the airport is roughly 84 km from Mbombela (Nelspruit) and around one to one-and-a-half hours from many Sabi Sand lodges. A shuttle service connects the airport with Skukuza Main Camp, while road transfers and rental cars provide onward travel through the region.
