About Shinyanga Airport
Shinyanga Airport is a small regional airport serving Shinyanga town and the wider Shinyanga Region in northern Tanzania. Also known as Ibadakuli Airport, it sits within the Lake Victoria zone and provides air access to an area known for agriculture, mining and regional trade.
The airport underwent a major rehabilitation and upgrading programme completed in the 2020s, including a 2,000-metre runway, a new passenger terminal and an expanded aircraft apron. The works raised the facility to a 3C operational classification, allowing it to accommodate scheduled regional flights and larger turboprop aircraft.
Located about 10 kilometres northeast of central Shinyanga, the airport is reached by road, with taxis, private transfers and local transport connecting it to the town and to nearby centres such as Kahama, Mwanza and Bariadi.
Air Tanzania has carried out test flights at the airport, and scheduled passenger services are expected to begin in September 2026, strengthening domestic connections between Shinyanga and other parts of Tanzania.
