About Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport
Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport is one of the two main airports serving Shanghai and a major gateway for domestic travel across China. Located about 13 km west of the city centre, it is the closest airport to downtown Shanghai and is closely integrated with the Hongqiao transport hub, which includes a major high-speed rail station and metro connections.
The airport's history dates back to 1921, making it one of China's oldest civil airports and the starting point of the country's early scheduled civil aviation. Today it operates two passenger terminals: Terminal 1 and the newer Terminal 2, which opened in 2010 and mainly handles domestic services.
Hongqiao primarily serves domestic flights within China, alongside a smaller range of international and regional routes, while long-haul international traffic is concentrated at Shanghai Pudong International Airport. The airport connects to the city by metro Line 2, metro Line 10, buses, taxis and private transfers, with Hongqiao Railway Station located next to Terminal 2.
