About Sabi Sabi Airport
Sabi Sabi Airport is a private safari airstrip located within the Sabi Sand Game Reserve, which borders the south-western edge of Kruger National Park in Mpumalanga, South Africa. Opened in 2004, it was developed to make travel to Sabi Sabi's lodges simpler and faster, serving guests arriving by light aircraft rather than handling scheduled commercial airline traffic.
The airfield has a single asphalt runway of about 1,500 metres and a compact passenger arrival and departure area. Federal Air operates daily scheduled flights from O.R. Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg directly to the airstrip, with connections through Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport near Nelspruit, while private charters and helicopter transfers are available on request.
The reserve lies about 500 km east of Johannesburg, roughly a five-hour drive, and around two hours from Nelspruit. The nearest larger settlement is Skukuza, approximately 18 km to the east, with the town of Hazyview also serving as a regional gateway.
On arrival, guests are welcomed by their ranger and driven to the lodges in open safari vehicles; transfers between the airstrip and the lodges are complimentary. The airstrip offers a simple, efficient arrival experience, with fuller guest services provided at the lodges a short drive away.
