About Rourkela Airport
Rourkela Airport is a domestic airport serving Rourkela, one of the major steel-producing cities of Odisha, India. Originally built as a private airstrip for the Rourkela Steel Plant, it was developed into a public commercial airport under the UDAN regional connectivity scheme, with scheduled operations beginning in January 2023.
The airport sits near Chhend Colony, about 6 km west of the Rourkela city centre. Its compact passenger terminal is built over roughly 5,785 square feet and can handle about 50 arriving and 50 departing passengers at a time, with a modular design that allows for future expansion. The 1,930-metre asphalt runway supports regional aircraft such as the ATR-72.
Alliance Air connects Rourkela with Bhubaneswar and Kolkata, giving travelers from western and northern Odisha a faster link to the state capital and eastern India's major gateway. Before the airport reopened for commercial flights, many passengers depended on road or rail connections to larger airports in Bhubaneswar or Kolkata.
Taxis, auto-rickshaws, and the state's Mo Bus service link the airport with central Rourkela and surrounding industrial and residential areas. With essential passenger facilities, accessibility support, and a compact, easy-to-navigate terminal, the airport serves business travelers, steel industry professionals, and regional visitors.
