About Rand Airport
Rand Airport is a general aviation airport serving Germiston and the East Rand, east of Johannesburg. Opened in 1931, it was Johannesburg's main international airport for many years before larger commercial traffic moved to other airports.
The airport was built in the 1920s and officially opened on 21 December 1931. It served as the city's principal airport until Palmietfontein took over in 1948, and the historic terminal building, designed to resemble an aeroplane from the air, still stands.
Located about 18 km from central Johannesburg, the airport is reached by road, with taxis, private transfers, rental cars and group transport providing onward connections to the city and surrounding Gauteng areas.
Today Rand Airport is a hub for private aviation, charters, flight schools and helicopter operations, with two runways and facilities including the Harvard Restaurant and the South African Airways Museum Society.
