It is located at Madhurapudi on National Highway 516E, approximately 16 km north of the city centre, and provides scheduled connections to major Indian cities.
The airport originated as a British-era airfield and was later revived for commercial flying in the 1980s under Vayudoot services. A modern passenger terminal was inaugurated in 2012, and the runway was extended to 3,125 metres in 2019, allowing the airport to handle larger narrow-body aircraft such as the Airbus A320.
