About Presidente General Óscar D. Gestido Binational Airport
Presidente General Óscar D. Gestido Binational Airport is the main air gateway for Rivera, Uruguay, and the nearby Brazilian city of Santana do Livramento. It is the first binational airport in Latin America, allowing flights to and from Brazil to be treated as domestic operations and strengthening the border region's connectivity.
Formerly known as Cerro Chapeu International Airport, the facility was modernized and reopened on 11 December 2023 after a US$13 million upgrade. It now has a single passenger terminal of about 820 square metres and a resurfaced 1,830-metre runway capable of receiving aircraft up to the size of a Boeing 737.
The airport lies roughly 10 to 12 kilometres southeast of downtown Rivera and about 12 to 13 kilometres from the centre of Santana do Livramento. It is reached by road, with taxis, private transfers and local transport options connecting passengers to both cities and the surrounding region.
Managed by Aeropuertos Uruguay, the terminal offers modern passenger facilities, security screening, immigration and customs handling, and onward travel services, making it a convenient entry point to northern Uruguay and southern Brazil.
