About Porto Alegre–Salgado Filho International Airport
Porto Alegre–Salgado Filho International Airport is the main international airport serving Porto Alegre, the capital of Rio Grande do Sul, and a key gateway to southern Brazil. It connects the region with major domestic hubs and international destinations in South America and beyond.
The airport opened in 1940 and was renamed Salgado Filho in 1951. In recent years it has undergone terminal modernization and runway works under private concession, improving passenger areas and capacity.
Located in the São João district, about 7 km north of central Porto Alegre, the airport has good road access and a direct link to the Trensurb urban rail network, making it easy to continue to the city centre and the wider metropolitan area.
After severe flooding closed the airport in May 2024, commercial flights resumed in October 2024 following major reconstruction. Today the single passenger terminal offers modern facilities, dining, shopping, lounges and onward travel options for domestic and international travellers.
