About Ponta Pelada Airport / Manaus Air Base

Ponta Pelada Airport, today known as Manaus Air Force Base (Base Aérea de Manaus), is a military airfield located in the Ponta Pelada area of Manaus, Amazonas. It opened on 20 January 1954 and served as the city's main civil airport for more than two decades.

On 31 March 1976, scheduled passenger operations were transferred to the newly opened Eduardo Gomes International Airport (MAO), and the site was placed under the control of the Brazilian Air Force. It now handles military aviation and some general and private aviation traffic rather than scheduled commercial flights.

The base lies roughly 5 km from central Manaus and has a single asphalt runway, 09/27, measuring about 2,042 metres. Road access to the city centre, the port and other districts is available for pre-arranged transfers, chauffeur services and private vehicles.

Because the site is an operational military base, public terminal services such as shops, restaurants and lounges are not provided. Travellers using the airfield for private flights should confirm access and handling in advance, while commercial airline passengers generally use Eduardo Gomes International Airport (MAO).
