About Polk Army Air Field
Polk Army Air Field (POE) is a U.S. Army airfield located within Fort Polk in Vernon Parish, Louisiana. It supports military aviation operations for Fort Polk and the Joint Readiness Training Center rather than scheduled commercial passenger service. In July 2023 the airfield was redesignated Maks Army Airfield in honor of 1st Lt. Joseph D. Maks, while many aviation sources and travelers continue to use the Polk Army Airfield name.
The airfield sits southeast of the main Fort Polk cantonment area, roughly 8 miles (13 km) from Leesville, the nearest city. It operates a single asphalt runway, 16/34, about 4,107 feet (1,252 m) long, together with a control tower and military aviation support facilities.
Because Polk Army Air Field is part of an active Army installation, access is restricted and visiting aircraft generally need prior permission. The airfield does not have public airline terminals, baggage claim areas, or commercial passenger amenities; flights are coordinated through Fort Polk aviation operations.
Ground connections to Leesville, Alexandria, and other communities in western Louisiana are primarily by private vehicle, taxi, prearranged transfer, chauffeur, or rental car. Travelers should confirm airfield access and transportation arrangements before arrival.
