About the Event

Essence Festival of Culture is one of the largest annual celebrations of Black music, culture and community in the United States, held each year over the Fourth of July weekend in New Orleans, Louisiana. The event began in 1994 as a one-time salute marking the 25th anniversary of Essence magazine and has since grown into a signature gathering presented by Coca-Cola.

The 2027 edition is scheduled to run July 2–5, 2027, and is organized around two connected parts. Free daytime programming takes place at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center, while the separately ticketed evening concert series is held at the Caesars Superdome.

During the day, the convention center hosts more than 17 individual events focused on empowerment, wellness, beauty, entrepreneurship, storytelling and community. Programming includes the Essence Film Festival, Essence Food & Wine Festival, Afropunk and Beautycon experiences, the Global Black Economic Forum stage, and brand activations from partners such as Coca-Cola, McDonald's and Target. Attendees can join panels, workshops, networking sessions and marketplaces.

Each evening, the Caesars Superdome becomes the home of headline concerts spanning R&B, hip-hop, soul and gospel. The performances draw a multigenerational audience, and the weekend's All-White Sunday tradition closes the concert series with a community-wide celebration. Concert nights are ticketed separately from the free daytime experiences.

The festival welcomes around 500,000 attendees each year and reaches more than a million additional viewers through virtual programming. Its audience spans families, friend groups, entrepreneurs, professionals, artists and culture enthusiasts, giving the weekend a distinctive family-reunion atmosphere.

New Orleans has hosted the festival every year since 1994 except for 2006, when it moved to Houston during Superdome repairs, and the virtual 2020 and 2021 editions. The event has been credited with more than $300 million in economic impact for the city and state, and it gives visitors a chance to experience New Orleans food, music and culture alongside networking and business opportunities.
