The airport began operating in 1939 and has been managed in recent decades as part of Estonia's network of regional airports. After a major renovation, the extended 1,970-metre asphalt runway reopened in 2021, followed by completion of the rebuilt passenger terminal, allowing the airport to handle regional and seasonal international flights as well as general aviation.
