About Võru

Võru is a compact town in southeastern Estonia and the administrative centre of Võru County, built around the shore of Lake Tamula. It is widely seen as the heart of the historic Võromaa region and a centre of Võro language and South Estonian culture, reflected in the local motto 'Üts ummamuudu liin', or 'a town unto itself'.

Founded on 21 August 1784 on the orders of Catherine the Great, Võru grew as a county town with a regular street plan and many historic wooden houses. The centre is defined by St Catherine's Church, Kreutzwald Park and the Fr. R. Kreutzwald Memorial Museum, which honours the doctor who wrote Estonia's national epic Kalevipoeg and worked in Võru for more than forty years. A lakeside promenade and the Roosisaare bridge link the centre with beaches and walking paths.

The town is small enough to explore on foot, from the central square and tree-lined Katariina alley to Lake Tamula's shore. Nearby attractions include Suur Munamägi, the highest point in the Baltic states at 318 metres, the wooded Haanja Nature Park, the Rõuge lake district and the Vastseliina castle ruins. Across the region, visitors encounter Võro traditions, smoke saunas and a strong local identity.

Võru's economy is built around wood processing, furniture production, food processing and services, and the town functions as a regional centre for the wider county. Its event calendar includes the Võru Folklore Festival, and in 2024 the town was part of the Tartu European Capital of Culture programme. Food and drink remain relaxed and local, with cafés and restaurants serving Estonian and Võro dishes and summer bringing activity to the lakeside.

For leisure travellers, Võru is a quiet, nature-focused base for exploring South Estonia, while business visitors benefit from its compact centre and road connections toward Tartu, Valga and Põlva. Intercity coaches provide the main public transport link, with passenger rail available from Tartu or Valga and international air access through Tallinn Airport or the smaller Tartu Airport.
