About Võru

Võru is a small, green town in southeastern Estonia and the administrative centre of Võru County. It sits on the shore of Lake Tamula and is widely regarded as the capital of Vana-Võromaa, the cultural region known for the distinctive Võro language and living local traditions. Its compact centre is easy to explore and has a calm, welcoming atmosphere.

The town was founded in 1784 on the order of Russian Empress Catherine II, and its historic street plan still follows the regular grid laid out at that time. Landmarks include the classical Catherine's Church, the Võrumaa Museum, the old fire station and the Kreutzwald Memorial Museum, dedicated to Friedrich Reinhold Kreutzwald, the compiler of the Estonian national epic Kalevipoeg.

A lakeside promenade connects the central square through Katariina Alley to Lake Tamula, where a beach, park and the Roosisaare suspension bridge offer easy outdoor recreation. Beyond the town, the rolling Haanja uplands, the observation tower on Suur Munamägi and the sandstone caves at Piusa are among the most popular excursions in southern Estonia.

Võru has a modest but active local economy based on wood processing, furniture making and food production, and it serves as a service and transport hub for the surrounding county. Its festivals, markets and community events reflect both contemporary Estonia and the older Võro and Seto cultures of the region.

For leisure travellers, Võru offers lakeside walks, heritage sights and access to some of Estonia's most distinctive landscapes. For business and event visitors, it provides a compact, practical base with hotels, conference facilities and easy connections to Tartu and the wider region.
