About New Orleans NAS JRB/Alvin Callender Field

New Orleans NAS JRB/Alvin Callender Field is a joint military airfield in Belle Chasse, Louisiana, roughly 12 km (7.5 mi) south of central New Orleans. It supports U.S. Navy, reserve, and joint military aviation operations in the Mississippi River delta region and is not a public commercial passenger airport.

The field traces its origins to a former commercial airfield named for World War I aviator Alvin Andrew Callender, which the U.S. Navy acquired in 1940. NAS New Orleans later moved from its Lake Pontchartrain location to the Belle Chasse site and was commissioned in December 1957; the installation adopted its current joint reserve designation in 1994.

The airfield operates with two paved runways, a 10,000 ft Runway 4/22 and a 6,000 ft Runway 14/32, plus a control tower. As a restricted military installation, the base limits access to authorized personnel and approved aircraft, with civilian landings subject to prior permission.

Located near Louisiana Highway 23, the base offers road connections to the French Quarter, the New Orleans central business district, and nearby Gulf Coast communities. Most public travelers use Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport (MSY), while NBG primarily serves military and other approved flight activity.
