About Nellis Air Force Base

Nellis Air Force Base is a major U.S. Air Force installation in North Las Vegas, Nevada, best known as the home of the U.S. Air Force Warfare Center, the Red Flag advanced air combat training exercises and the Thunderbirds aerial demonstration squadron. Its airfield, which uses the IATA code LSV, primarily supports military flight operations rather than scheduled commercial passenger service.

The installation traces its roots to the Las Vegas Army Air Field, which opened in 1941 as a gunnery and pilot training base during World War II. It was later renamed Nellis Air Force Base in honor of Lieutenant William Harrell Nellis, a Nevada native and fighter pilot killed in action in 1944.

Located about 8 miles (13 km) northeast of downtown Las Vegas, the base sits close to the Las Vegas Strip and major highways, making it relatively convenient for authorized visitors and personnel traveling to and from the city. Access to the installation is restricted and requires proper identification and authorization.

The airfield operates two main runways and a small Space-A passenger terminal for eligible military travelers. Road access connects the base with Las Vegas, North Las Vegas, Henderson and surrounding southern Nevada destinations, while scheduled commercial flights in the region are handled primarily at Harry Reid International Airport.
