About the Event

Burning Man is the signature annual gathering of the Burning Man Project, held in the temporary desert metropolis of Black Rock City on the playa of the Black Rock Desert in northern Nevada. The 2027 edition runs from Sunday, August 29 through Monday, September 6, and centers on the theme Spellbound, which explores the mechanics of enchantment, mythology, storytelling and the psychology of belief.

The Spellbound theme frames Black Rock City 2027 as a "bazaar of enchantments" in which divination, illusion and ritual performance are woven through the event. Participants are invited to examine the stories that shape attention and belief, from palmistry, tarot and I Ching to fire rituals, sleight of hand and other belief-defying performances.

The event is built around a temporary city laid out on the dry lakebed, with named streets, a Center Camp and hundreds of themed camps that host workshops, performances, gathering spaces and communal projects. Large-scale art installations and mutant vehicles fill the open playa, while the central Man burns on Saturday night and the Temple, a quieter space for messages and remembrance, burns on Sunday night.

Black Rock City draws artists, engineers, performers, builders, volunteers, first-time participants and longtime Burners from around the world, with attendance typically in the tens of thousands. There are no spectators: everyone is expected to participate, practice radical self-reliance and contribute to the community, which operates on a gift economy with no vending or commercial sponsorship.

Attendees should expect extreme desert conditions, including intense daytime heat, cold nights and sudden dust storms, and must bring their own water, food, shelter and shade. The experience combines large-scale art, kinetic and illuminated sculpture, live performances and spontaneous community rituals with Burning Man's 10 Principles, including radical inclusion, gifting, decommodification and leaving no trace.

Tickets are distributed through a lottery and main sale via , typically opening in the spring, and vehicle passes are required separately. Many participants travel through Reno, about 100 miles south, using the Burner Express bus, car rentals or shared rides to reach the playa, then help dismantle the city and restore the desert when the week ends.
