About Moanda Airport
Moanda Airport serves Moanda, a manganese-mining town in Gabon's Haut-Ogooué Province in the east of the country. It mainly handles general aviation and operator traffic linked to the town and the surrounding mining region, rather than large scheduled commercial services.
Opened at its current site in December 2010, the airport replaced an older airfield after about two and a half years of construction work. The relocation was prompted by the discovery of manganese deposits beneath the former runway, and the new airfield was built with a longer runway of about 1,900 metres.
The airport lies a short distance from central Moanda, making it relatively quick to reach the town by road. Taxis, private transfers and rental cars provide onward connections, while Franceville, the provincial capital, is roughly 30 km away.
Because the airfield is compact and used mainly in daylight under visual flight conditions, travelers should confirm flight and access arrangements in advance. For most visitors, Moanda Airport functions as a practical local gateway to this part of eastern Gabon.
