About Ogooué-Maritime
Port-Gentil is Gabon's second-largest city and its economic capital, standing on Mandji Island at the tip of the Cape Lopez peninsula in Ogooué-Maritime province. A deep-water port facing the Atlantic has made the city the country's main centre for petroleum, timber and fishing, while its long beaches and lagoon scenery give it a relaxed coastal character.
The city was named after French colonial administrator Émile Gentil and developed in the early twentieth century around shipping and timber. Its landmarks include the Romanesque-style Saint-Louis Cathedral, built between 1926 and 1936 and among the oldest churches in Gabon, as well as the Cape Lopez lighthouse at the peninsula's tip, where tankers wait offshore near the Sogara oil refinery.
Districts such as Balise, Plaine and Cap Lopez each offer a different feel, from busy markets and port activity to residential streets and beachfront leisure. The Marché de Port-Gentil is a lively place to see fresh fish, produce and everyday trade, while beaches such as Plage du Dahu and Plage de la Sablière are popular for swimming and sunset views. Across the water, the Fernan-Vaz lagoon can be reached by boat for trips to the Sainte-Anne church attributed to Gustave Eiffel.
As Gabon's oil and gas hub, Port-Gentil draws business travellers working in energy, port logistics, timber and fisheries. Hotels, restaurants and services are concentrated around the centre and beach areas, and the food scene leans heavily on fresh Atlantic seafood alongside French-influenced and Central African cooking.
For visitors, Port-Gentil works well as both a business base and a coastal getaway. It is reached mainly by air through Port-Gentil International Airport or by sea from Libreville, since the city has no road link to the rest of the country.
