About Ogooué-Ivindo

Ogooué-Ivindo is a vast, forest-covered province in northeastern Gabon and one of the country's most remote, nature-rich regions. Its capital and main town, Makokou, sits along the Ivindo River and acts as the practical gateway to the surrounding lowland rainforest.

Much of the province is dominated by dense Congo Basin forest crossed by rivers that have long served as routes for trade and movement. Ivindo National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, protects roughly 300,000 hectares of primary forest, waterfalls and wildlife habitats close to Makokou.

The region's history is tied to its forest and rivers. Makokou developed as a colonial-era administrative and timber centre, and today communities of Kota, Fang, Kwélé and other groups shape local life. Logging, iron-ore prospects around Bélinga and river trade remain part of the provincial economy.

Main sights include Kongou Falls and Mingouli Falls on the Ivindo River, the wildlife-rich Langoué Baï clearing, and the forest trails and boat routes of Ivindo National Park. In Makokou itself, the market, riverfront and simple cafés offer a grounded introduction to daily life in the province.

For travellers, Ogooué-Ivindo appeals mainly to those seeking wildlife, waterfalls and a quieter, off-the-beaten-path experience. Business and research visitors are drawn by forestry, mining and conservation work, while all visitors should plan for limited infrastructure and long distances.

Ogooué-Ivindo Travel Guide

Best Time to Visit

The drier periods from June to August and mid-December to February are the most practical months for road travel, forest walks and visits to Ivindo National Park. Heavy rains from February to May and September to December can make rural tracks muddy and some park areas harder to reach.

How to Get Around

Makokou is small enough to explore on foot, with shared taxis and motorcycle taxis for short trips. For Ivindo National Park and outlying areas, 4x4 vehicles are usually necessary, and river boats are used along the Ivindo; long-distance road travel from Libreville can take a full day or more.

Where to Stay

Most visitor accommodation is in Makokou, with a small selection of hotels and guesthouses used as a base for the region. Simple lodges and research camps near Ivindo National Park offer overnight options closer to the forest and waterfalls, though they should be arranged in advance.

Food & Drink

Local eating is centred on Makokou's market and small restaurants, with river fish, cassava, plantains, rice and dishes such as nyembwe chicken appearing on menus. Fresh produce, snacks and drinks are easy to find in town, while supplies are limited once travelling into remote areas.
