About Mfuwe International Airport
Mfuwe International Airport is the main air gateway to South Luangwa National Park, one of Zambia's largest and best-known wildlife areas. The airport opened in the mid-1970s as a domestic facility and gained international status in 1995 when it was gazetted as a port of entry and exit.
Located near the settlement of Mfuwe in Mambwe District, Eastern Province, the airport primarily serves safari tourism. It offers daily flights from Lusaka and regional connections such as Lilongwe, and supports more than twenty lodges and campsites around the Luangwa Valley. Its single terminal is designed to handle around 100,000 passengers per year.
The airport sits close to the South Luangwa area, with a 2.2 km runway and basic customs and immigration facilities. Most visitors continue by pre-arranged lodge transfer, private transfer or taxi to camps and lodges, with journeys ranging from short drives to longer trips into the park.
