About Eastern

Chipata is the capital of Zambia's Eastern Province and the country's fifth-largest city, set along the Great East Road roughly 570 km east of Lusaka and about 20 km from the Mwami border with Malawi. It serves as the main trade and transport gateway between Zambia and Malawi, as well as the jumping-off point for South Luangwa National Park.

The city's roots reach back to the colonial-era settlement of Fort Jameson, and today it remains the seat of the Ngoni kingdom in Zambia. The annual Nc'wala ceremony, held at Mutenguleni near Chipata in late February, celebrates the first harvest and draws thousands of visitors, while Chewa, Tumbuka, Ngoni and Nsenga traditions shape local culture.

Central Chipata centres on the busy Down Shops area, known for its Indian-owned stores and market trade, with Kapata as the historic heart of town. Visitors can climb Kanjala Hill for panoramic views, browse Kapata Market and the Central Market, or explore local Ngoni heritage at the Nsingo Community Museum.

Chipata's economy is built on agriculture and agro-processing, including maize, groundnuts, cotton, soybeans and sunflower, alongside cross-border trade. The city links to Lusaka by the Great East Road, connects to Malawi through the Sena railway extension, and is served by Chipata Airport for domestic flights.

For travellers, Chipata works as a practical base for both business and leisure: it offers hotels, guest houses and lodges, while South Luangwa National Park lies about 110 km to the northwest near Mfuwe. Its border position and year-round trade make it a natural stop on routes between Zambia and Malawi.

Eastern Travel Guide

Best Time to Visit

The dry season from May to October offers pleasant weather, clear skies and the best wildlife viewing in nearby South Luangwa National Park. Late February brings the Nc'wala ceremony, a major Ngoni cultural festival that draws large crowds to Chipata.

How to Get Around

Central Chipata is compact and easy to explore on foot, with taxis and shared minibuses for longer trips across town. Private cars, chauffeurs or rental vehicles are useful for reaching Mfuwe, South Luangwa National Park or the Malawi border.

Where to Stay

Hotels and lodges are concentrated around the town centre and along the Great East Road, including established options such as Protea Hotel Chipata and Crystal Springs. Guest houses in quieter residential areas offer budget-friendly choices, while safari lodges near Mfuwe suit park visitors.

Food & Drink

Local meals centre on nshima, a maize staple served with relishes, while groundnut-based dishes and snacks such as chikanda are common. Kapata Market and the Central Market sell fresh produce, and the town's cafés and restaurants mix Zambian cooking with Indian-influenced flavours.
