About Manakara Airport
Manakara Airport is a small airfield serving Manakara, a town on Madagascar's south-east coast in the Vatovavy-Fitovinany region. The airport lies about 3 km north of the town centre and operates as a public restricted airfield under the management of Association VELOGNIZY.
Unlike larger hubs, WVK has no regular scheduled passenger services and is used mainly for charter, private, medical and humanitarian flights, with only occasional monthly movements. Its single asphalt runway is about 1,200 m long and can accommodate aircraft up to the size of an ATR 72.
One of the airport's most unusual features is that the Fianarantsoa–Côte Est railway crosses the runway, making it one of the few airports in the world where aircraft and trains share the same ground. Airport staff give aircraft priority and activate a stop signal for trains whenever an approach is reported.
Facilities are limited, with no refuelling or runway lighting, so operations are best suited to daytime visual approaches supported by VHF radio information. Most visitors continue the short distance into Manakara by taxi or a pre-arranged vehicle.
