About Madrid–Torrejón Airport / Torrejón Air Base
Madrid–Torrejón Airport / Torrejón Air Base is a joint military–civil airfield located in Torrejón de Ardoz, about 24 km east of central Madrid. Operated by the Spanish Air and Space Force, it mainly handles military, government and authorised general aviation traffic and acts as a technical alternate for civil aircraft approved in connection with Madrid-Barajas.
The base has a long military history and was used by the United States Air Force until 1996. In February 1997 it was opened to limited civil traffic under an agreement between Spain's defence and transport ministries to help relieve Barajas, and a small civil terminal was developed for that early passenger use. Today scheduled commercial passenger services no longer operate from the aerodrome.
The airfield has a single asphalt runway of 3,658 metres and operates around the clock, with prior permission required for most foreign and civil flights. Civil operations use designated areas within the base, and handling agents provide limited passenger, ramp and ground support services.
Road access is straightforward via the A-2 Madrid–Barcelona corridor and surrounding motorways. Transfers to central Madrid, Torrejón de Ardoz and Alcalá de Henares are normally made by pre-arranged vehicle, taxi or private car, making the airfield a controlled and practical option for authorised business and private aviation.
