About Lindi Airport
Lindi Airport, also known as Kikwetu Airport, is the main airport serving Lindi, the capital of Tanzania's Lindi Region in the south-east of the country. The small facility primarily supports domestic and regional travel, providing a gateway for air travel in southern Tanzania.
The airport lies approximately 20 kilometres northeast of Lindi town. It is owned by the Government of Tanzania and operated by the Tanzania Airports Authority, with grass runways and a modest terminal building serving a low volume of passenger traffic.
In September 2016, the government announced plans to expand and upgrade the airport at an estimated cost of US$125 million, with rehabilitation works since progressed by the Tanzania Airports Authority to improve passenger and operational facilities.
Road access links the airport to Lindi, with taxis and pre-arranged transfers among the most common onward options. As a gateway to southern Tanzania, the airport provides access to Lindi town, Mikindani, the Kilwa Kisiwani World Heritage ruins and the Indian Ocean coastline.
