About Lefkoniko Airport / Geçitkale Air Base
Geçitkale Air Base, also known as Lefkoniko Airport, is a military airfield located near the town of Lefkoniko in the Famagusta district of Northern Cyprus. It carries the IATA code GEC and ICAO code LCGK, and was originally built as an alternative to Ercan Airport.
Construction began in December 1982 and was completed in November 1985, with the airfield officially opening on 7 March 1986. During Ercan Airport's renovation, Geçitkale served civil traffic for two weeks in July 1992 and again between 2002 and 2004. Since 2012 the airfield has been closed to commercial flights and is currently open only to visual flight rules (VFR) traffic.
The airfield has a single runway, designated 09/27, measuring 2,850 metres in length and 45 metres in width, at an elevation of about 45 metres. It is situated roughly 24 km from Famagusta and about 35–40 km east of Nicosia.
Road access connects the airfield with Famagusta, Nicosia and surrounding areas, with onward travel generally arranged by private transfer, taxi, chauffeur or rental car. Passenger facilities are limited, so visitors should plan their travel needs in advance.
