Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport is the principal commercial airport serving Mbombela (Nelspruit) and the Mpumalanga Lowveld. It opened in October 2002, replacing the smaller Nelspruit airfield as the region's main air link for travellers heading to South Africa's wildlife and scenic attractions.
The airport sits roughly 25 km northeast of the Nelspruit city centre and is best known as a convenient gateway to Kruger National Park, the Panorama Route and nearby towns such as White River, Hazyview and Sabie. Its domestic routes connect the region with Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban and Lanseria.
A single terminal handles all arrivals and departures. The building is distinctive for its African-themed architecture and expansive thatched roof, covering about 7,350 square metres and making it one of the largest thatch-covered airport terminals in the world.
