Kilwa Masoko Airport (KIY)

Kilwa Masoko Airport is a small regional airport serving Kilwa Masoko and the Kilwa District in Lindi Region, southeastern Tanzania. Opened in 1954 during the colonial era, it is managed and operated by the Tanzania Airports Authority and provides an air gateway to the southern Swahili coast.

The airport handles domestic flights with light turboprop aircraft such as the Cessna Grand Caravan, connecting the area with Dar es Salaam and other regional destinations. It is a practical arrival point for travelers visiting the UNESCO World Heritage sites of Kilwa Kisiwani and Songo Mnara, which are reached by boat from Kilwa Masoko harbor.

Located about 1 nautical mile north of Kilwa Masoko town, the airport has a 1,800-metre runway and a single small passenger terminal where check-in, security and baggage claim share one open-plan hall. Operations run from sunrise to sunset because there is no runway lighting for night landings.

From the terminal, taxis and motorcycle taxis connect to the town centre, lodges and harbor in roughly 10 to 15 minutes. Facilities are basic, so travelers should bring cash and refreshments, while the airport's rescue and firefighting service and meteorological station support safe regional operations.
