About Khowai Airport
Khowai Airport is a small airport located in Khowai, Tripura, India, and is managed by the Airports Authority of India. The airfield dates back to the Second World War, when it was established on land donated by the royal family of Tripura, and for decades it supported domestic turboprop flights across the region.
The airport is currently non-operational for scheduled commercial passenger services and mainly accommodates occasional private charters and government helicopters. Its single asphalt runway, designated 18/36, is approximately 914 metres long, which limits the size of aircraft it can handle.
Situated about 2 km from Khowai town centre, the airport is close to the town, but most travelers reach the district through Maharaja Bir Bikram Airport in Agartala, the state capital, and continue by road or rail via Teliamura station.
Facilities at the airport itself are minimal, with no regular dining, retail or financial services, so onward services are generally arranged in Khowai town or Agartala. Reviving the airport under India's regional connectivity scheme has been discussed as a way to improve access to Khowai district.
