About José Aponte de la Torre Airport
José Aponte de la Torre Airport is a public-use airport owned by the Puerto Rico Ports Authority and located about 3.7 km from the centre of Ceiba, on Puerto Rico’s eastern coast. It opened in November 2008 on the site of the former Roosevelt Roads Naval Station, replacing the former Diego Jiménez Torres Airport in nearby Fajardo.
The airport serves as a convenient regional gateway for travellers heading to the island municipalities of Vieques and Culebra, with frequent short flights operated by regional carriers such as Vieques Air Link and Air Flamenco. It also supports general aviation and limited passenger connections to San Juan.
Its single runway, designated 7/25, measures about 3,353 metres and can accommodate a wide range of aircraft. The passenger terminal is compact and easy to navigate, with check-in, a waiting area, a cafeteria, parking and ground transportation access concentrated in one location.
By road, the airport is reached via the eastern Puerto Rico highway network, roughly an hour’s drive from the San Juan area depending on traffic. Its position near Ceiba also makes it useful for travellers continuing to the Ceiba ferry terminal serving Vieques and Culebra, as well as to Fajardo and other eastern coastal destinations.
