About Yabucoa

Yabucoa is a town and municipality on Puerto Rico's southeastern coast, set in a fertile valley that opens onto the Caribbean Sea. Known as La Ciudad del Azúcar, or the City of Sugar, it is closely tied to the island's sugarcane heritage and is nicknamed the Azucareros.

Founded in 1793, Yabucoa takes its name from a Taíno word meaning the place where yuca is cultivated. Its past as a sugar-producing centre remains visible at the old Central Roig mill, where equipment from 1883 still stands beside the Guayanés River, and at the ruins of Hacienda Santa Lucía, a former sugar estate.

The municipality is ringed by green hills and offers some of the east coast's most appealing shoreline. Playa Lucía and Playa Guayanés are popular for swimming and relaxing, while El Cocal and the Concha Acústica Toño Márquez provide open-air gathering spaces near the sea.

Local life blends agricultural tradition, community festivals and baseball. Events include the Sugar Cane Festival in May and the Campesino Festival in October, and the town honours its patron saints, the Santos Ángeles Custodios. Seafood and classic Puerto Rican dishes are served in small, family-run restaurants and beachside kiosks.

For visitors, Yabucoa works well as a quieter base for exploring the southeast coast, with San Juan and its international airport roughly an hour away by road. The area is also notable as the place where Hurricane Maria made landfall in 2017, and its recovery remains part of the town's recent story.
